The Spirit of Valentine’s Day: How to Create a Romantic Evening at Home
At Casalatina, we have always loved a celebration, and if it speaks of love and legacy, we embrace it with particular enthusiasm.
Valentine’s Day traces its origins to the Roman festivities of February and evolved over centuries into a celebration shaped by poetry and devotion. By the fifteenth century, handwritten Valentine´s cards were already being exchanged. In 1415, Charles, Duke of Orléans, wrote to his wife from the Tower of London: “I am already sick of love, my very gentle Valentine.” Soon after, red roses and Cupid became lasting emblems of Valentine's day.
Remembering this history reminds us that love has always been expressed through thoughtful gestures, a philosophy that continues to inspire how we celebrate around the table today.
Valentine's Red. The Colour of Love.
Red is not merely decorative. It is emotional architecture.
Historically, it has symbolised passion, devotion and vitality; from the deep carmine pigments of Renaissance paintings to the lacquered dining tables of Mediterranean homes. Red stimulates appetite, heightens the senses, and draws people closer. It is warmth made visible.
For the table, it does something remarkable: it transforms the ordinary into the intentional.
"Red does not whisper. It invites."

1. Begin with Texture
Layer natural textures with hand painted ceramic plates. Let the materials speak. Handcrafted surfaces create depth that mass perfection never can.
Keep the Palette Intentional
Red works best when grounded. Pair it with ivory, burgundy, or deep charcoal. The restraint makes the colour feel sophisticated rather than theatrical.
Add a simple gesture of romance
A handwritten poem at each place setting. A sprig of rosemary tied with silk ribbon. A shared dessert served on one plate.
Romance lives in nuance and Valentine´s Day is the perfect occasion.
Let the table breath
Negative space is elegance. Allow each piece — plate, glass, cutlery — room to exist. Intimacy thrives in simplicity.
Candlelight Is Non-Negotiable
Low, flickering light softens conversation and flatters everything it touches. Opt for tapered candles or small clusters, never overhead glare.
Our Red Edit for Valentine´s Day
An intimate dinner is about connection, not complication. At Casalatina, we believe red tableware is timeless, not just for Valentine's Day, but perfect for setting the scene for a Valentine’s dinner at home that feels effortless, elegant and entirely yours.
a poem to celebrate love
Tactics and Strategy
My tactic is to look at you
To learn how you are
Love you as you are
My tactic is to talk to you
And listen to you
And construct with words
An indestructible bridge
My tactic is to stay in your memory,
I don’t know how
Nor with what pretext
But stay within you
My tactic is to be honest
And know you are too
And that we don’t sell each other illusions
So that between us there is no curtain or abyss
My strategy instead is
Deeper and simpler.
My strategy is that some day
I don’t know how, nor with what pretext
That finally you need me.
