The Woodworkers of Galapa

The Woodworkers of Galapa in Atlántico, Colombia, have gained a reputation for their exceptional craftsmanship and their utilisation of detailed carving techniques. Situated southwest of Barranquilla, the capital of Atlántico, Galapa Township is particularly renowned for its artisan workshops specialising in red ceiba woodcarving. This traditional carving method is employed to create the vivid and vibrant masks that play an integral role in the Carnival of Barranquilla. These masks, crafted from wood, paper, or fabric, largely reflect the cultural fusion that occurred in the Colombian Caribbean region since the 16th century, blending influences from African, indigenous, and European traditions.
