Getting ready for summer hosting
For me, summer has always been about family. With our loved ones scattered across the world, summer is the one time we all come together — gathering at my house in Spain to spend a few precious weeks reconnecting, laughing, and creating new memories. It’s a slower, more joyful rhythm in a world that, for a little while, becomes just ours.
Over the years, I’ve learned that a little preparation in late spring makes all the difference between a summer spent running around after everyone and one where I can truly enjoy long, lazy lunches, spontaneous sunset drinks, and those quiet, meaningful conversations that only happen when life slows down.
We don’t quite go to the lengths of Meghan, with love — no handmade bath salts or rainbow fruit platters here — but getting a few essentials organised early means I can truly switch off and savour every moment with my guests.
1. Get the Practicalities Out of the Way - before summer!
Before the first suitcase even hits the doorstep, we start with a full deep clean of the house. Spring is the perfect time to tackle this — giving everything a fresh feel after the winter months.
Next comes the tech check. There’s nothing more frustrating than a broken Sonos when you’re trying to set the perfect summer vibe, or an air conditioner that decides to give up on the hottest day of the year. A quick once-over now means smooth sailing later.
Towels and Linens: The Rule of Three
When it comes to hosting summer guests, fresh linens are non-negotiable. I always aim for three full sets per room: one in use, one in the wash, and one on standby for emergencies (because with family, there’s always a surprise or two!).
I also like to make sure there are plenty of beach towels ready to go — because in our house, a swim is never too far away.
Create Spaces for Connection
Summer entertaining doesn’t have to be complicated. For me, it’s about creating welcoming spaces where people naturally gather. A table under the trees, a sofa big enough for a nap or a book, a bar cart stocked with everyone’s favourites.
Simple touches like beautiful tableware from our CasaLatina collections, easy-access drink stations, and baskets of sun hats or throws for cooler summer evenings make guests feel instantly at home.
Keep Meals Simple and Sociable
I love to serve dishes that can be shared — platters of grilled vegetables, fresh seafood, big colourful salads. The less formal, the better.
Having a few signature dishes that I can prepare ahead of time means I get to spend less time in the kitchen and more time at the table, where the best memories are made. Some of my absolute favourites are quiches, cold gazpacho soups and ceviches in all their forms.
Embrace the Imperfection
Finally, and maybe most importantly — don’t sweat the small stuff.
Summer is about ease, laughter, and togetherness. A slightly wonky table setting or a last-minute change of plans isn’t a disaster; it’s part of the charm. In the end, it’s the feeling of welcome that people remember — not the perfectly polished details.
Here’s to a summer of simple pleasures, full hearts, and homes brimming with life.
I hope these tips help you enjoy every minute of it — just as I plan to with my family this year.
With love,
Sharon
